What a way to start my blog career!! After edging past the double defending champions Chelsea last year to win the English Premier League, Manchester United showed Chelsea once again, the taste of United's magic, at Old Trafford by defeating them 2 goals to nil. It was a fantastic performance from Man Utd who now have gone 4 games in the premiership without conceding a goal. This win takes them to the 2nd place in the standings.
The proceedings at Stamford Bridge last week were disturbing to Chelsea and they never really looked like winning without Jose Mourinho. It was always United who had the urge to win and it was no surprise that they came on top. The match started with United getting all the scoring opportunities initially. Literally, the ball was with United all the time. But somehow they couldn't score. Chelsea's defender John Obi Mikel was given a red card for a serious tackle on Patrice Evra and this didn't help for Chelsea's cause. Finally, the goal came from Carlos Tevez in the injury time of 1st half and what an occasion to score his first goal for The Reds!!!
Chelsea tried to regroup in the second half, but to win with 10 men against a top quality team like United is nearly impossible, that too, when the Reds are on a high. Though Ashley Cole and John Terry breached the United defense on some occasions, they couldn't go past the ever reliable Edwin Van der Sar. Rooney couldn't control his emotions and was red-carded for showing dissent. Tevez was substituted by the Frenchman Louis Saha, and was given a loud applause when he left the field. John Terry was also red carded shortly for a serious tackle.
The match seemed to be the United's 4th consecutive 1-0 win. Saha was awarded a penalty in the final minutes of the game which he converted and that brought the loudest round of cheers at Old Trafford. Saha has scored second year in a row against Chelsea at Old Trafford. It could have been 3-0 had Saha scored a header opportunity in the injury time. No regrets though, as Man Utd wins against arch rivals Chelsea comfortably. To win against in-form Man Utd with only 10 men was always going to be a tough task and Chelsea succumbed to the pressure.
It has capped the end of a perfect week for United during which, they won their Champions League match against Sporting Lisbon in Portugal with Ronaldo scoring the only goal of the game. That's all from me today and I am eagerly waiting for the Ind-Pak final in Twenty20 world cup tomorrow. Sayonara....
